Green House: Exterior Plan

We’re finalizing the exterior plan as quotes come in for new windows, doors, garage door, siding, and porch columns.
All of which got me thinking we should fill you in!
First up: color! The house needs something that will work with that green metal roof – but not draw attention to it. Bright white siding is out (it will only make the green stand out). Cream/tan/brown are not my favorite pairings with that dark green either. That pushes me in the direction of gray, and when I mocked it up with gray siding I knew it was the way to go!
The front of the house will get some major curb appeal! We’ll replace the metal porch columns with nice white square posts, add new siding, windows, garage door and front door, shutters and landscaping. I’m also advocating to add some chunky white trim around the windows and doors – a small detail that will have a large impact! And of course we could paint the front door – but with the green roof, gray siding, white accents, and cedar accents I want to exercise caution if we go that route.
The grass in the yard is going to be a challenge – it was pouring today and the soil under the big front tree barely even saw a drop of rain! We’re thinking of doing a rather large landscaping bed around the front tree and then reseeding the remainder of the yard. If you have fought (and won) the fight of getting grass to grow with very little sun or water we’d love to know how you did it!
In the back yard the work has already begun. There were two large trees close to the house that needed to go. One was right where a patio is going in (and was much too close to the house – see below), and the other had split in such a way that it was only a matter of time until it came down on the house. In addition to that, having six (!) huge trees on the property meant that very little light came into the house. Removing those trees has brought the sunlight streaming in!

We’re planning on having a concrete company pour a generous sized patio out back, which will make this yard feel usable. In addition, we’ll fix the fencing, add a little landscaping, and of course change the siding, doors and windows:
